Strawberry Fields – Growing Instructions

Getting Started
Sowing & Growing
Harvesting
Crate Care
Getting Started
  • As soon as possible after receipt remove the plants from their packaging and check the compost. If dry then give them a drink
  • Position the crate in a sunny, sheltered spot although partial shade will be OK
  • Place the liner in the crate making sure you push it down into the corners, leaving any excess liner overhanging the sides
  • Fill the crate to about 1cm from the top using moist general purpose compost and firm the surface
  • Trim the excess liner so that it is level with the crate lip
Sowing & Growing
  • Using the template provided place the plants in position on the surface of the compost, spacing them equally apart
  • Plant with the crown at soil level
  • Water well
  • Feed the plants every couple of weeks with liquid tomato feed
Harvesting
  • Lovely deep rose flowers will be produced from April to September with fruit forming in abundance throughout the summer
  • Pick any fruit as soon as it is bright red and ripe
  • You may need to place a net over the crate to stop the birds from stealing the fruit but do check the net regularly to make sure no birds get caught up.
  • For maximum fruit yield our advice is to buy new strawberry plants each year but if you do want to keep the plants they will need to be over-wintered in a frost free place.
Crate Care

Your crate has already been treated with a weather-resistant stain that should last for about 3 years. After this time, to keep your crate in tip-top condition, please re-treat as required. Your crate will last longer if stored under cover during the worst of the winter weather.
