Salad Days – Growing Instructions

Crate Care
Getting Started
  • Place the liner in the crate making sure you push it down into the corners, leaving any excess liner overhanging the sides
  • Fill the crate to about 1cm from the top using moist general purpose compost and firm the surface
  • Trim the excess liner so that it is level with the crate lip
Sowing & Growing
  • Using the template provided mark out the 3 sections on the surface of the compost. A ruler or bamboo cane will help to make your lines nice and straight but if you prefer wiggly lines that’s fine!
  • Growing instructions are shown on each individual packet but in summary simply scatter the seeds thinly onto the surface, cover lightly with sieved compost and gently firm the surface. Then water.
  • You won’t have used all of the seeds so keep the packets in a cool dry place and sow again in a couple of weeks for repeat cropping. Why not check out the range of Suttons Seed Tins on our website? They’re perfect for storing your opened packets and look pretty good too!
  • Keep the compost moist and as the seedling appear thin them to around 3 cm apart. These thinnings can be eaten as baby leaves, perhaps as a garnish or just added to a salad
Harvesting
  • Young leaves tend to be tastiest so snip them off with scissors once they are 10-12cm high
  • After a quick wash your salad leaves are ready to enjoy and more will soon be ready from your repeat sowings
Crate Care

Your crate has already been treated with a weather-resistant stain that should last for about 3 years. After this time, to keep your crate in tip-top condition, please re-treat as required. Your crate will last longer if stored under cover during the worst of the winter weather.
